Study Population: We are enrolling intermediate risk people with diabetes to see if we can identify “very high risk” individuals earlier using 3D plaque composition to improve their treatment management.

Background: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Although people with T2DM are routinely treated with lipid-lowering therapy because they are considered high risk, cardiovascular outcomes remain poor, emphasizing the need to identify those at the greatest risk who may benefit from earlier, more intensive preventive treatment.

Primary Aim: To determine if 3D carotid ultrasound plaque composition can identify vulnerable plaque (soft/echolucent plaque with a large lipid core) and stratify people with diabetes at “very high risk” for cardiovascular outcomes.

Secondary Aim: To determine the impact of visualization of atherosclerotic plaque on patient behaviour.
