Dr. Kafka’s Corner

50 Quick-Fire Congenital Heart Disease Cases and Answers

By Henryk Kafka, Braeden Hill, and Amer Johri

There are now many more adults with congenital heart disease than ever before, and the adult cardiologist needs to have the skills to deal with these patients, particularly when it comes to imaging. These fifty cases range from simple to complex, from common to rare, and include both native and post-intervention cases; but each provides the reader the opportunity to test and improve adult congenital heart disease imaging skills.

This book is available for download as a PDF-style ebook containing still ultrasound images for each case, or as a video-style ebook containing live ultrasound clips for each case.

Handheld Cardiac Ultrasound: Case Series

The New Cardiac Physical Exam

By Charles Nadeau-Routhier, Atul Jaidka, Matthew Church, and Amer Johri

Handheld cardiac ultrasound is a new way of imaging a patient’s heart at the bedside. This series of interactive cases will demonstrate how this tool can be incorporated into the physical exam and how it can help with earlier diagnosis and management of certain cardiac conditions. Targeted at medical trainees and new doctors, this book is a collaborative project made by members of the Cardiovascular Imaging Network at Queen’s University (CINQ).

Congenital Heart Disease Review

Volume II – Cyanotic Lesions

By Amer Johri, Marbin Cases, Pavel Antiperovitch, and Others

This book is the 2nd volume of the congenital heart disease series.  As the 1st volume, this book is intended to provide a simple ‘quick reference’ to a limited number of common, complex cyanotic congenital heart lesions. This is not intended to be a comprehensive reference but a starting point from which learners can begin to understand cardiac anatomy in a portable, viewable format.

Within each chapter are hand-drawn illustrations of selected lesions with corresponding echocardiographic and MRI images demonstrating key imaging planes. Additionally there are example ECGs and audio files of associated murmurs.

This book is available for download with iBooks on your Mac or iPad, and with iTunes on your computer.

Introduction to the Cardiac ICU

By Madelaine Wernham, Richard Veldhoen, Winnie Chan, Tina Zhu, Taylor Drury, Peggy DeJong, and Amer Johri. With illustrations by Julia Herr.

This book is designed by resident physicians at Queen’s University as a resource for residents rotating through the Cardiac ICU. The ICU serves patients with severe and life threatening cardiac conditions including ischemic heart disease, heart failure, and arrhythmias.

This book presents four common clinical scenarios that the reader must work though in an interactive format. The cases include ECGs, X-rays, MRIs, and echocardiograms. Key guidelines and evidence based resources are referenced throughout the book.

This book is available for download with iBooks on your Mac or iPad, and with iTunes on your computer.
